Who handles a crash report in West Hills?

Usually the LAPD on neighborhood streets and the CHP on the freeway. The LAPD lists West Hills under its Topanga Community Police Station, on Schoenborn Street in neighboring Canoga Park, and its Valley Traffic Division investigates traffic collisions across the Valley Bureau. In the City's community plan, the Ventura Freeway forms West Hills' southern edge, and crashes on it are generally handled by the CHP's West Valley Area. Our Canoga Park page explains how to request an LAPD crash report and how long it takes.

If anyone was hurt, the drivers involved must also make a written report within 24 hours to the CHP or, inside a city, to the CHP or the city police department, and report the crash to the DMV within 10 days (Vehicle Code §20008 (opens in a new tab); §16000 (opens in a new tab)). Our car accident page walks through the other steps.

What if a city street, sidewalk or city vehicle was involved?

West Hills is part of the City of Los Angeles, so a claim over a dangerous city street or sidewalk, or a crash with a city vehicle, usually starts with a written claim filed with the Los Angeles City Clerk, generally within six months of the incident. The City says only the City Clerk can accept it. Our Los Angeles page explains that process, claims involving Metro, the County or federal vehicles, and where injury lawsuits are filed.

Where would a West Hills injury case be heard?

In most cases, the Los Angeles County Superior Court. Its local rules divide the county into 12 districts, each with its own courthouses, and since October 10, 2022, new unlimited personal injury cases have been filed in the district where the incident arose. The court points filers to the filing court locator on its website to find that district. Our Los Angeles page explains the filing rules in more detail.

West Hills' main roads

The community plan bounds West Hills by Roscoe Boulevard on the north, Topanga Canyon Boulevard on the east and the Ventura Freeway on the south, with the Simi Hills to the south and southwest. It describes the place where the 101 enters the San Fernando Valley, within this plan area, as framed by the Santa Monica Mountains and the Simi Hills. The 1999 plan also called for improving Roscoe Boulevard to four through lanes between Jason Avenue and Valley Circle Boulevard (community plan (opens in a new tab)).

West Hills questions

Could a sheriff's deputy take my West Hills crash report?

Possibly. West Hills is in the City of Los Angeles and the LAPD lists it under its Topanga station, but the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Malibu/Lost Hills Station also lists West Hills among the areas it serves, along with cities such as Calabasas and Hidden Hills. If a deputy rather than an LAPD officer responded, the report is the Sheriff's, and the Sheriff's Records and Identification Bureau handles requests for traffic collision reports by appointment or by mail. Check the agency name on the paperwork you were given at the scene.

Is there a burn center in West Hills?

Yes. UCLA Health says UCLA West Valley Medical Center is the only UCLA Health hospital with a dedicated burn center. Its Regional Burn Center, on the hospital's fourth floor, has 27 inpatient beds, a hydrotherapy room and two hyperbaric oxygen chambers, and it treats adults and children. If a burn came from someone else's carelessness, such as a vehicle fire after a crash, a free case review can help you understand your options.

What if the accident happened just over the line in Calabasas or Hidden Hills?

Then different agencies may be involved. The City's community plan lists the Cities of Hidden Hills and Calabasas, and parts of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties, as neighbors of the plan area that includes West Hills. Both cities are served by the Sheriff's Malibu/Lost Hills Station rather than the LAPD, and a claim about a public street there generally goes to the agency that owns it, under its own process. The CHP's West Valley Area serves Calabasas and Hidden Hills as well as the City of Los Angeles.

Our Calabasas page covers that city's claim process.
