What if a city street, sidewalk or city vehicle was involved?

Canoga Park is part of the City of Los Angeles, so a claim over a dangerous city street or sidewalk, or a crash with a city vehicle, usually starts with a written claim filed with the Los Angeles City Clerk, generally within six months of the incident. The City says only the City Clerk can accept it. Our Los Angeles page explains that process, claims involving Metro, the County or federal vehicles, and where injury lawsuits are filed.

The City Clerk's office takes claims through its online Claim for Damages portal, which gives you a claim number right away, or on the paper claim form, signed and mailed or delivered in person to the City Clerk, 200 N. Spring Street, Room 395, City Hall. It says emailed or faxed claims are not accepted (City Clerk (opens in a new tab)).

Canoga Park's main streets

As the City's community plan draws it, Canoga Park sits on the valley floor between Roscoe Boulevard on the north and Victory Boulevard on the south, with Fallbrook Avenue on the west and De Soto Avenue on the east. The plan describes its traditional main street commercial corridor as being reestablished as a community hub. The 1999 plan also deferred proposed peak-hour parking limits on Sherman Way until the business district's pedestrian and streetscape improvements could be evaluated. Its Canoga Park Industrial Corridor runs from Vanowen Street to Roscoe Boulevard, between Canoga Boulevard and Deering Avenue, alongside the former Southern Pacific rail line (community plan (opens in a new tab)).

For the plan area as a whole, which also covers Winnetka, Woodland Hills and West Hills, the plan lists traffic speed and volume as a safety problem for many residential neighborhoods and some commercial areas (community plan (opens in a new tab)).

Canoga Park questions

How do I get an LAPD crash report for a Canoga Park collision?

Online or by mail, but not right away. Before you request it online, the LAPD says to allow at least 45 days after the collision for the report to be reviewed and approved for release. Reports go to authorized people, such as the victims and their representatives. Reports involving an arrest, a death or a juvenile can't be released online and must be requested by mail, using the LAPD's request form with a check or money order. Have the report (DR) number ready if the officer gave you one.

Is Winnetka part of Canoga Park?

No. The City's community plan treats Winnetka as its own community, one of the earliest in the area to be settled, bounded by Roscoe Boulevard on the north, Corbin Avenue on the east, Victory Boulevard on the south and De Soto Avenue on the west. That puts it right next to Canoga Park, across De Soto. Both are in the City of Los Angeles, both are listed by the LAPD's Topanga station, and the same City claim rules apply in each.

What if a work truck hit me near Canoga Park's industrial area?

Write down the company name on the truck, any numbers on its door and the driver's information. The community plan describes an industrial corridor between Canoga Boulevard and Deering Avenue, from Vanowen Street to Roscoe Boulevard, that has long been a source of local jobs. When an employee causes a crash while doing the job, the employer can also be responsible (Civil Code §2338 (opens in a new tab)). Our truck accident page explains how these claims work.
